Law / Gospel

It's not always easy to explain the relationship between the Law and the Gospel. In fact, I'm sure as some read my blog they think I pit them against one another far too often, and perhaps I do. I certainly don't intend to do that, but in emphasizing one, I can sometimes demean the other - and usually, it's "the law" that comes out the worse for wear. So, I've been thinking about that, and a friend of mine shared a verse with me that I think explains the Law/Gospel relationship perfectly.

"I run in the path of your commands, for you have set my heart free." Psalm 119:32

Before my heart was set free through the word of the Gospel, I did not "run" in God's commandments. In fact, I was quite unable to "run" in the commandments because I was so weighed down by the guilt the commandments produced!

Apart from the Gospel, the law, because it was holy and I was unholy, produced death in me through sin. But now that the word of the Gospel has come into my heart and the Spirit has made me alive in Christ, I am FREE to run in the way of God's commands. I do not despise the law of God, rather, I delight in it...even when I fail to obey it...for in the law I see the beauty of the person of God and in keeping it fully, Christ has fulfilled the righteous demands of the law for me.

I am free to run, not away from the law, but in it.

So then, the law becomes a joy rather than a duty, like a child who loves to obey his parents because of their love for him and his love for them.

As I read your post I thought of Psalm 40:8 which I memorized recently. Then co_heir's comment hit on it too...
"I delight to do your will, O my God; your law is within my heart."
I agree - the letter of the law is no longer on my shoulders (crushing me)... the Spirit has made it alive and beautiful - within!

The truth shall set us free. I think this is great. Daniel and me had a wonderful conversation about this almost a month ago now and it really has helped me in that perspective alot. It's amazing how our minds change over time and are able to find new and amazing Truth's in scripture that have been there just waiting to be discovered.

God gave the law to draw people closer to God. Like anything, it was perverted to become a tool with which to beat up people. I believe that when our hearts are right, obeying God is a natural extension of that heart.

Senselight...HEY! Good to hear from you. Give my best to your other half;)! It is amazing what God is doing in both our lives. I've had a sort of home coming, and it has been good. Hope school is going well...

Dan, without a doubt, it's a matter of the heart. The Law is a schoolmaster to bring us to Christ, but once that happens, the Law becomes a delight.

You are correct. I Tim. 1:9 states that the Law was not made for honest, just people, but to control the lawless and destructive, haters of God and righteousness...When you love the Lord and have His character written in your character then it is a pleasure to live the life of joy and adventure of service that He allows. We know the Truth (John 14:6) and He has set us free.

R.S. Westcott...THANKS for visiting Paradoxum and thank you for your comment. You know, the similarities between John 14:6 and Psalm 119:32 never crossed my mind. Thanks for making the connection.
