small steps...

A friend of mine (wolfgang) said something this morning that really struck my heart. He said,

"I'm tired of pursuing. I'm told to pursue God, my wife, my kids, a ministry, etc. You know, I don't want to pursue anymore because it feels like striving. Rather than pursue, I want to follow. I just want to follow Jesus...and he takes small steps...he has to take small steps because he's leading children like me."

He went on to describe that pursuing God seemed to put most of the emphasis on HIM as if he were tracking God while following put the emphasis on Jesus and his ability to lead where we needed to go. When you follow someone to a party, you don't think about where you're going, you just follow the person in front of you who knows how to get there.

I think the difference between following and  pursuing is subtle but very significant.

I think your friend is right when he says that the whole idea of pursuing puts the emphasis on what he can do. That's why we have Christians "crashing and burning" when the pursuit gets to be too much and we lose sight of the One we are pursuing and focus on being the pursuer.
