Seraphim...
Above him stood the seraphim. Each had six wings: with two he covered his face, and with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew. And one called to another and said: "Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of hosts; the whole earth is full of his glory!"
Thomas Watson was fond of saying that when we study God we learn to "adore where we cannot fathom." I've certainly found this to be true in my life. As of late, I've had opportunity to meditate upon God via the Seraphim. The very existence of the Seraphim tells me much about God.
The Seraphim, as far as I can tell, were created to do ONE thing: adore and proclaim the HOLINESS of God. What kind of a God is this that he creates a being to adore and proclaim his holiness? In all my contemplations of the holiness of God I have only a miniscule appreciation for him. I see him sometimes, but only in mirror...dimly. I can't help but feel a measure of envy for the Seraphim. What would it be like to continually proclaim and adore the holiness of God Almighty? The understanding they have of his holiness is far beyond me...for now.
Someday...someday, I will no longer see in a mirror dimly, but I will see him face to face. Someday I will not only gaze upon his holiness and adore him and proclaim his holiness...but someday I will PARTICIPATE in his holy glory in a way that the Seraphim never have. You see, I am ONE with Jesus Christ - his holiness has been GIVEN to me and I will participate in HIS glory! This is the HOPE of the Gospel.
Truly, our meditations upon God and his Gospel causes us to "adore where we cannot fathom". We have a God who is so Holy that he creates a being whose sole purpose is to adore and proclaim his Holiness! And it is this Holy God who loved us so much that he took our sin upon himself so that we might be forgiven, set free, redeemed, and made to share in his glorious holiness! Sinners, foreknown, chosen, called, redeemed, set free, forgiven, justified, sanctified, and yes...GLORIFIED. Saints who are UNITED with a Holy God to share in his infinite glory - this is the GOSPEL!
