Watson & Calvin...

Thomas Watson has long been one of my favorite authors. I'll never forget reading his The Ten Commandments when I was in the tenth grade. It took me all year to read it. I still have that book, and treasure it. This quote is taken from his work, A Body of Divinity:

"The glory we give God is nothing else but our lifting up his name in the world, and magnifying him in the eyes of others."

If you love the Gospel, I expect you'll love this quote as well.

HT: Of First Importance

“Observe, that the design of the gospel is this- that the image of God, which had been effaced by sin, may be stamped anew upon us, and that the advancement of this restoration may be continually going forward in us during our whole life, because God makes his glory shine forth in us by little and little.”

That pretty much sums up what the Gospel does. It's so much more than just a ticket to heaven

There's a great line in the Episcopal Rite I Eucharist liturgy that asks God to give us "...everlasting life and all other benefits of His passion." I love that. I follow Jesus not to escape hell, rather to return back to God a small portion of what God has given to me, because God is my God and King. Whenever I feel down, I list the benefits of Christ's passion, it helps me with perspective. Peace, Dan

Co_Heir, I think the Calvin comment has particular reference to my conversation with Dan (Cerulean Sanctum), don't you?

Dan, what a great practice - listing the benefits of Christ's passion. I agree that we don't come to Christ as a "fire escape", and I agree that the benefits of believing are innumerable! However, it's also glorious good news to know that I will never experience the wrath of God that encompasses Hell. Amazing that our Jesus took our hell for us. Thanks for the comment! Hope all is well at your church! Peace. f

I think it does fit with that conversation. As I told Dan, I don't think you two are really that much in disagreement.
