the year of living biblically...

I saw this clip at Jake Belder's blog. I thought it was pretty interesting. Watch it HERE.

This particular exchange grabbed my attention. I'm sure you know why.

"On your average day did you find that you were unable to fulfill this or were there days where you could absolutely fulfill it for 24 hours at a time?"

"Never! You're always going to break rules...I was astounded by how much I sinned once you start to pay attention."

"So you had a rude awakening that on a daily basis you covet and you lie?"

"Absolutely. It was a rude awakening."

Glad you enjoyed the clip, man...funny how he found the law to serve one of its purposes, to show him his sinfulness. But it's unfortunate he didn't find it to serve another purpose, to lead him to Christ.

I was just at a conference last weekend and the speaker said something to the effect of:

"No matter what ethical guidelines you have developed for yourself. Any standard of right and wrong, the things you've said you'd never do...you done them. You've broken your own law.

If we can't even keep our own ethical standard...do we need any other proof that we are in need of a Savior?"

I'd never heard it that way before (starting with whatever standard we have for ourselves--usually people start with "God's standard" and tell you you've transgressed it.)

My brain is becoming full from all that I've been reading about the Gospel, law, and legalism. God is really clarifying some things in my mind and bringing into sharper focus just what this journey is about. Of course, that doesn't mean he's shining light too far up the path. :)

I heard an interview with this guy on NPR and found it interesting that the one command that got him the most was do not covet. Too bad he hadn't included Romans 7 in his year of living biblically. Brings the story of the rich young ruler into a new clarity for me.

Bob, good point. You really can start from just about any conception of good and you will fail to meet it. Interesting.

Co_heir...I'll be anxious to hear about this. Perhaps we need to do coffee again!

Fergus, we are definitely overdue for coffee!
